Folgende Kurse können im Studienjahr 2022/23 belegt werden:
Im Sommersemester 2023 / Second semester (14/3/23 – 30/6/23):
- Prof. Maya Balakirsky Katz “Reel Jews: Cinema and the Jewish Experience” (Zoom) (Bar-Ilan)
Time: Tuesday 10:00-11:30 IST
Description: This course is devoted to the rise of film and the popularization of the cinematic apparatus from the perspective of the considerable scholarly attention it has received in the field of Jewish Studies. Whether helping to shape it, being accused of controlling it, self-censoring or banning its consumption on grounds of its perverse effects on the soul, or celebrating it as a tool of democratization, Jews have had an intimate and sometimes painful relationship to cinema
Teaching aims:
-Attain an understanding of the role that various forms of cinematic technologies played in modern Jewish history.
-Improve critical analytic skills as they apply to Jewish studies and visual culture perspectives.
-Gain familiarity with seminal studies on visual culture written from the perspective of various disciplines.
-Build writing skills
Requirements: The course requires regular attendance and participation. A student who is absent from more than three lectures for no justifiable reason will not be permitted to submit the assignment and will not receive a grade in the course.
Written Assignment 4-5 pages. Attendance and participation—required and 10% of grade. Written assignment—90% of grade
- Prof. Claudia Rosenzweig-Kupfer “Telling the Shoah in Literature, Comics, Cinema” (2) (Zoom) (Bar-Ilan)
Time: Tuesday, 12:00–14:00 IST
This class is meant to offer a broad spectrum of fictional works dealing with the theme of the Holocaust. The question of ‘fictionality’ within such a field is problematic, and yet it is important to posit it, in order to try to ask the difficult question of what is going to happen when the ‘era of the witnesses’ will be over and how art can approach it.
The students will get to read or read again works such The Shawl by Cynthia Ozick (1980), If not now, when? by Primo Levi (1982) and Maus by Art Spiegelman (1980–1991), and see films such as Sidney Lumet’s The Pawnbroker (1964) and Louis Malle’s Au revoir les enfants (Engl. Goodbye, Children, 1987).
Requirements: Each student must submit 2 assignments, give a presentation in class and write a final paper. The assignments and the participation to the discussion in class compose 60% of the final mark, the presentation and the paper the 40%.
