"The Legacy of the Holocaust Revisited: Israeli Visual Culture" (2 SSt/8 ECTS/Seminar)
The course examines the legacy of the Holocaust as reflected in Israeli arts. There has been a growing tendency, in which the horrors of the past are revisited by third generation Holocaust survivors. Rather than using the past as a means to perpetuate intergenerational feelings of pain, shame and blame, contemporary artists depict the un-imageable past in order to better understand it. Their novel approach reflects on a budding hope that universality, trans-nationality and equality can coexist with long-established Jewish ethics, as a new norm in Israel. The seminar will be held in English. Students can submit their written papers either in German or English.
