557.042 Depicting Oneself: Exploring Jewish Identities in Visual Arts
Self-portraiture is one of the most intriguing forms of painting: it is a projection of oneself; it is a way to present oneself to the outside world, to explore the inner self and convey messages about one’s social status, beliefs and identities. The focus of the course will be a number of self-portraits created by artists of West- and East-European Jewish origin in the course of the 19th and the 20th centuries (e.g.: Moritz Oppenheim, Maurycy Gottlieb, Max Liebermann, Marc Chagall, Felix Nussbaum). Their self-presentations will be used as triggers to explore the artist’s changing, often hybrid and fluctuating identities, reflecting processes that they as Jews experienced - from emancipation, acculturation and integration, to the rise of nationalism, anti-Semitism and the Holocaust. The visual explorations of their selves will be used to raise questions about the Jewishness of “Jewish art”, to explore the artists’ other creations, and the ongoing visual discourse with their non-Jewish artistic and cultural surroundings.
